Seniors Brace for All-Star Football Game

The Ventura County all-star football game should develop into a contrast of styles Saturday night at 7:30 at Oxnard High.

The West team intends to grind it out with powerful running backs Freddie Bradley of Hueneme, Tim Albrendt of Ventura, Paul Rezac of St. Bonaventure and John Johnson of Channel Islands.

The East will air it out with tall, strong-armed quarterbacks Wayne Cook of Newbury Park and Rick Carpenter of Santa Paula.

Sixty-eight of the county’s top seniors will participate. Hueneme’s George Machado will coach the West and Camarillo’s Carl Thompson will coach the East.

Bradley and Johnson each rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season. Cook signed a letter of intent to play quarterback at UCLA and Carpenter passed for more than 2,000 yards last season.

“Our backs look super because they are running behind outstanding linemen,” Machado said.

Top West linemen include JR Perez and Jim Caballero of Santa Clara, Jose Montelongo of Channel Islands and Matt Biesecker of Buena. Should Machado decide to pass, his quarterbacks can choose from a fine group of receivers, including Santa Clara’s Matt Young, Buena’s Jim Collins and Ventura’s Chris Thomas.

Cook and Carpenter’s targets will include James Jones of Royal and Matt Wollcott of Westlake. Among those providing protection will be tackle Rick McCathron of Thousand Oaks.
