DeLaittre Transfers to Valley After Redshirting 1st Season

Shawn DeLaittre, who helped lead Simi Valley High to the Southern Section 4-A Division basketball title in 1988, has transferred from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to Valley College.

DeLaittre, a forward who averaged 21.6 points and 8.8 rebounds a game during his senior season at Simi Valley, transferred to Valley after redshirting his freshman season at San Luis Obispo.

Doug Block, 25, has been hired as defensive line and film coach for the Cal State Northridge grid team.

Block worked with the defensive line at Southeast Missouri State last season. He previously had been a graduate assistant at Arkansas State, where he attended school and played football.

Block replaces Jerry Campbell, the new football coach at St. Bernard High in Playa del Rey.

Running back Albert Fann, linebacker Preston Hayslette, quarterback Sherdrick Bonner and tight end Richard Ane have been selected captains of the Cal State Northridge grid team by the players.

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed former Cleveland High player Kevin Holmes to a one-year contract to play backup to forward Charles Barkley. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Holmes, 24, was the 76ers’ fifth-round draft pick in the 1986 NBA draft. For the past three years, he has played overseas for Pully, Switzerland.

Last season, the 6-foot-8 Holmes averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds. His team won the Swiss league, playoffs and Swiss Cup.

The Burbank Hilton Sure Shots captured the American Softball Assn. Women’s Fast Pitch B national championship Sunday in Tucson, Ariz., with a 4-3 victory over Joe’s Unocal of Tucson.

Kim Powers of the University of Indiana, a 1987 graduate of Burroughs High in Burbank, was named tournament MVP.
