Mickelson 2 Shots Back

Phil Mickelson, two-time San Diego Section golfer of the year, is two strokes behind leader Eoghan O’Connell of Ireland after the first day of qualifying Tuesday in the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship in Ardmore, Pa.

Mickelson, who won the 1989 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. individual championship as a freshman at Arizona State, shot a two-under par 70.
