Stanley Wins; James Flunks Chief Physical

Mildred Stanley of Escondido ran away with the California senior women’s golf state championship title Wednesday, winning by 23 shots.

Stanley, 60, shot a final-round 75, the best of the tournament at the Del Monte Country Club in Monterey, for a three-day total of 231, nine over par. Runner-up Joyce Dow of Santa Clara shot an 87 and finished at 254.

Competitors must be 55 or older.

FOOTBALL

The Kansas City Chiefs announced that ex-Charger Lionel (Little Train) James had flunked his physical. James, who was claimed on waivers Tuesday from the Chargers, has a bad hip.

VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. women’s volleyball team, after losing to Canada Tuesday night, came back at Southwestern College in Chula Vista and defeated the Canadians, 15-2, 15-9, 9-15, 15-8.

Keba Phipps led the U.S. with 19 kills, and Kim Oden added 15.

The four-match series is tied 1-1.

Two Palomar League girls’ volleyball teams were among the top 10 in USA Today’s national rankings published Wednesday. The national daily picked Poway High fifth, and on the strength of its showing at last weekend’s Iolani Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, chose Torrey Pines 10th.

In the tournament, Torrey Pines beat two of the country’s perennial powers, University High of Honolulu and Santa Barbara, en route to the championship.

SOCCER

The Sockers, who open training camp Sept. 25, will play an exhibition game Oct. 1 against San Diego State.

All proceeds from the annual game will go to SDSU men’s soccer.

Tickets will be on sale at the Aztec Bowl box office the night of the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
