L.A. Southwest 12, Valley 9--A holding penalty on the final play of the game wiped out what would have been the winning touchdown for Valley in a Western State Conference opener at Los Angeles Southwest College.
With no time left, Valley quarterback Mark Mengoli threw a 12-yard pass to tight end Sean Brown for a touchdown and an apparent victory, but the play was nullified by the penalty.
Southwest improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the WSC Northern Division. Valley fell to 0-3, 0-2 in the Southern Division.
Southwest scored the decisive points in the fourth quarter on a pair of Jason Thomson field goals. The first, from 26 yards with 11:34 left, tied the score, 9-9. The second, from 17 yards, came with 2:40 left.
Craig Manigo completed eight of 16 passes for 80 yards and scored the only Southwest touchdown on an 18-yard run in the first quarter. On the extra-point attempt, Valley blocked the kick and Scott Holden recovered and ran the ball back 97 yards for a safety.
