Austin Puts Canyon Volleyball Team Atop Century League

Dawn Austin had 14 kills and 11 blocks as Canyon High School took over first place in the Century League with a 15-8, 5-17, 15-9, 5-15, 15-13 victory over El Modena Tuesday at Canyon.

Canyon is 8-2 overall and 5-0 in league matches. El Modena falls to 4-1 in league matches.

In other Century League girls’ volleyball matches:

Villa Park 3, Santa Ana Valley 2--Villa Park (3-7, 2-3) rallied from a two-game deficit at home for a 10-15, 6-15, 15-6, 17-15, 15-7 victory.

Foothill 3, Santa Ana 0--Heather Harmon had six kills and two aces to lead Foothill (7-4, 2-3) to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-11 victory at home.

In Angelus League girls’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Bishop Amat 1--Mary Eberhart had 12 kills and Tracy Rice had 15 assists for host Mater Dei in a 15-7, 8-15, 15-9, 15-11 victory at home.

In Empire League girls’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Los Alamitos 2--Sharman Grant had 17 kills and seven aces and Julie Greer had 17 kills and six aces as the Aztecs (9-1, 5-0) took a 15-5, 9-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-7 victory at Los Alamitos.

El Dorado 3, Loara 2--Vicky Burk had 13 kills and Jennifer Pettey added nine as El Dorado (8-8, 2-3) won, 7-15, 16-14, 15-9, 15-17, 15-9, at Loara.

In Garden Grove League girls’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Nichole Huss had nine kills as visiting La Quinta (7-4, 6-3) won, 15-8, 15-5, 15-4.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Magnolia 3, Anaheim 0--Jill Schneider had 18 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and two aces as Magnolia (7-4, 3-2) won, 17-15, 15-12, 15-12, at Anaheim (4-7, 3-2).

In South Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Irvine 3, Dana Hills 2--Shawna Mickartz had 24 kills and Danielle Rolston added 11 as Irvine (5-4, 3-2) won at home, 15-12, 15-11, 9-15, 7-15, 15-12.

In Sunset League girls’ volleyball:

Edison 3, Westminster 0--The Chargers (7-4, 4-1) won at Westminster, 15-2, 15-3, 15-5.

In Empire League water polo:

El Dorado 14, Esperanza 4--Kyle Utsumi, Matt Svoboda and Matt Maclear each had three goals for host El Dorado (13-3, 2-0), which led at halftime, 7-1.

In Del Rey League water polo:

Mater Dei 6, Crespi 3--Goalkeeper Chad Roghair had 15 saves and Charlie Wallace had three goals for the Monarchs (15-5, 6-1) at Santa Ana Valley High.

In nonleague water polo:

Villa Park 6, Long Beach Wilson 5--Gavin Arroyo scored four times for Villa Park (16-3) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Irvine 17, Fountain Valley 7--Greg Tonkovich had four goals and Greg Shank, Jeff Mulholland and Ed Carrera added three each for host Irvine (11-8).

Edison 16, Mission Viejo 12--Brian Stanton had six goals and goalie Matt Shacht had 10 saves for visiting Edison (9-6).

Long Beach Millikan 9, University 4--Greg Krogen scored two goals for University at Belmont Plaza.

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Los Alamitos 13, Esperanza 5--Jennifer Shoudt remained undefeated in league play by winning, 7-6, 6-0, 6-0, for the Griffins (10-2, 6-1). Stefanie Springosky and Meredith Vault won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, in doubles for Los Alamitos.

Katella 15, Cypress 3--Lynn Vonusa won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, and two doubles teams swept for host Katella (13-2, 6-1).

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Villa Park 16, Santa Ana Valley 2--Tobey Wu and Marie Birnbaum swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for host Villa Park, which also swept all three singles matches.

In Orange League girls’ tennis:

Western 13, Savanna 5--Cindy Brown and Sara Wadhwani swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-3, to lead visiting Western (12-1, 6-1). Cindy Kuragami remained undefeated by sweeping her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Savanna (6-7, 4-3).

Valencia 14, Brea-Olinda 4--Julie Williams swept, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to lead visiting Valencia (10-4, 6-1), which reminaed tied for first with Western.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 13, Laguna Beach 5--Jenny Marques won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0; Brook Fleming won, 6-2, 6-0-, 6-0, and Noriko Hopkins won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, as host Laguna Hills swept singles at home.

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Capistrano Valley 17, El Toro 1--The Cougars’ singles players swept their sets at Capistrano Valley (13-0, 5-0). Page Bartelt won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1; Allison Light won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and Lisa Shulga won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2. The doubles teams of Angie Arias and Farrah Tierney (6-3, 6-3, 6-1) and Pam Berning and Jennifer Palumbo (6-2, 7-5, 6-1) also swept for the Cougars.

In Sunset League girls’ tennis:

Fountain Valley 13, Huntington Beach 5--Michelle Berkowitz didn’t lose a game in her three sets and Renee Urricariet won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, for the host Barons (8-5, 5-1).
