Somewhere in a mess of 240 yards of penalties, 67 points, four turnovers and 736 yards in total offense, there was a football game at Orange Coast College Saturday night.

Fullerton rolled to a 41-26 victory over Orange Coast in the Mission Conference Central Division game in front of 2,500.

The Hornets (5-2 overall, 4-2 in the conference and 2-0 in divisional play) took a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Fullerton quarterback David Chisum had an impressive night, completing 15 of 20 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Fullerton running back Jeff Andrews ran for 87 yards in 15 carries, including a 41-yard burst for Fullerton’s first touchdown.

The Hornets had a fourth-and-one situation at the OCC 41 when Andrews took a pitch from Chisum, started outside, picked up a block, cut back to the middle and was gone.

OCC’s Lawrence Hatch fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Fullerton’s Doug Martinson recovered at the OCC 28. Fullerton was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, but still drove in for a touchdown.

Don Norris scored on a 11-yard run and Fullerton led, 14-0, with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

OCC cut the lead to 14-7 on a one-yard run by Jason McGehee early in the second quarter, but Fullerton came right back, with the help of OCC.

The Pirates (5-2, 4-2, 1-1) appeared to have stopped Fullerton on third down, but OCC was called for a late hit, giving Fullerton a first down and a second chance.

Four plays later from the Fullerton 42, Chisum completed a pass to Mike Thomas near the OCC 35, and raced the rest of the way for a 58-yard touchdown pass play.

A 21-yard field goal by Eric Lange and a 35-yard scoring run by Tony Goulet in the third quarter gave Fullerton a 31-7 lead.

With Fullerton’s big lead, OCC threw the ball most of the second half. Greg Angelovic was 14 of 22 for 194 yards with an interception.

Mike Cederoth replaced Angelovic late in the third quarter, and was eight of 20 for 149 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Both interceptions were by defensive back Orlando Robbins, who has eight this season.

Fullerton finished with 369 yards in total offense. OCC had 367, including 343 passing.

“Dave (Chisum) played well,” Fullerton Coach Hal Sherbeck said. “So did Jeff (Andrews). We sputtered at times on offense, but we played hard and I was pleased with the effort.”
