FALL ROUNDUP : Westlake Rolls to Win in Girls’ Tennis Playoffs

Westlake High swept host La Canada, 18-0, on Saturday in the second round of the Southern Section 3-A Division girls’ tennis playoffs.

The Warriors (21-0) were led by No. 1 singles player Jennifer Reese, who posted 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1 victories. Westlake will play Calabasas in a quarterfinal match Tuesday at a site to be determined.

In doubles, Westlake’s No. 1 team of Alyse Bartelstone and Alison Levitt defeated Krista Stamison and Bridget Sorenson, 6-3; Heather Blanche and Jenny Mayer, 6-2; and Shannon Hendler and Alison Horssall, 6-3.

La Canada finished 16-5.

In other second-round tennis matches:

Calabasas 12, Alhambra 6--The Coyotes (14-0) earned a match against Westlake on the strength of perfect performances by their top three singles players.

Natasha Pospich, Stacey Jellen and Alison Paris each recorded 6-0 victories over Cynthia Akasa, Wendy Kiso and Anne Leyden.

Calabasas’ top doubles team of Samantha Meo and Tracey Paris defaulted to Sandy Lau and Uan Huynh but defeated Mai Vuong and Christina Chan and Jackie Uzuhara and Ana Chang.

Louisville 10, Upland 8-Louisville, the San Fernando Valley League champion, improved its record to 19-2 in a 2-A match as the Royals’ top singles player, Shelee Gautreau, returned to action after sitting out a first-round win over Nogales because of a leg injury. Gautreau, 1-2, dropped her first two sets before winning the third, 7-5.

Agoura 13, Glendale 5--The Chargers (13-5) swept all nine doubles sets at Agoura en route to a quarterfinal berth in the 3-A playoffs. Agoura will play Dana Hills on Tuesday at a site to be determined by today’s coin flip.

Girls’ Volleyball

La Reina d. Apple Valley, 5-15, 15-6, 16-14, 15-2--Carolyn Russo had 15 kills and Sheri Sisko added seven in the 2-A Division second-round playoff match at Apple Valley.

Men’s Basketball

Moorpark 96, Fullerton 74--Freshman point guard Sam Crawford scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for the Raiders (2-0) in the championship game of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament. Crawford, the tournament’s MVP, also handed out 12 assists and had six steals.

Roger Thomas scored 21 points and Charlie Cangelosi added 17 for Moorpark, which outrebounded Fullerton, 35-29.
