Ramona 79, San Marcos 64--Host Ramona led at halftime, 45-27, and was never in danger. Frank Thomas led Ramona (8-1, 1-0) with 22 points and Todd Johnson had 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Carlsbad 54, Escondido 47--Trailing, 30-23, at halftime, Carlsbad scored the first nine points of the second half en route to its league-opening victory at home. Calvin Coleman (20 points) and Mark Tague (15 points, 14 rebounds) led Carlsbad (4-7, 1-0).

Palomar League

Torrey Pines 64, Poway 46--Torrey Pines, the defending Division II champions, soundly defeated Poway, the defending Division I champions, in their league opener at Torrey Pines. The Falcons (13-1, 1-0) forced Poway (9-1, 0-1) into 22 turnovers and outscored the Titans in every quarter. Poway shot just 26% (13 for 50) from the field to 39% (19 for 49) for Torrey Pines. Bart Brandenburg had 20 points for Torrey Pines. Greg Sorrell had 20 for Poway.

Fallbrook 89, Orange Glen 48--Travis Teagle scored 15 points and Alan Chatman and Chris Miller 14 each for visiting Fallbrook (10-3, 1-0). The game was over by the end of the first quarter, when Fallbrook led, 23-1.

Mt. Carmel 108, San Dieguito 93--Mike Graves scored 21 points for host Mt. Carmel (9-3, 1-0). Matt de La Pena and Tony Mancuso each scored 24 for San Dieguito.

Rancho Buena Vista 89, Vista 66--Darryl Parker led all players with 25 points and 13 rebounds to pace Rancho Buena Vista (5-5, 1-0). Brad Grubaugh added 17 points and James Lewis 10 points and 10 assists. Choo Choo Walker had 20 points for Vista (3-6, 0-1).

Metro Conference

Sweetwater 97, Montgomery 23--Five players scored in double figures for visiting Sweetwater (14-1), which led after three quarters, 82-12. Montgomery didn’t score in the third quarter. Carlos Campbell led Sweetwater with 21 points.

Chula Vista 63, Southwest 61--Carnell Penn led host Chula Vista (11-4, 1-0) with 24 points. Devin Patterson had 25 for Southwest.

Bonita Vista 70, Mar Vista 50--Allen McNemee scored 20 points for visiting Bonita Vista (7-4, 3-0). Jim Gruber had 14 for Mar Vista (2-11, 1-2).

Castle Park 56, Hilltop 53 (OT)--With less than 30 seconds left in overtime and the score tied, Castle Park’s Tony Thompson grabbed the last of his game-high 17 rebounds, then hit Brad Grady on the outlet pass for a breakaway game-winning layup. Grady was fouled on the play and made the free throw. Hilltop’s Chris Costello made a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation to tie it. But the Lancers failed on a three-pointer seconds before the game ended. Castle Park is 5-7, 2-1.

Madison Tournament

University City 72, Point Loma 50--Supe Hooper scored 27 points, and Anthony Hill scored 18, including four three-pointers, as University City improved to 10-1 in the first-round game.

Nonleague

Kearny 72, San Diego 59--Tommy Rawlins scored 30 points and Danny Scott added 17 as host Kearny (10-4) upset San Diego (11-2). Kearny won the game at the free-throw line, where the Komets were 29 of 42. Rawlins shot eight consecutive free throws with 2:31 left when San Diego Coach Dennis Kane was assessed three consecutive technical fouls and ejected. Carlos Morgan held San Diego standout Clark James to 15 points.

USDHS 60, Mira Mesa 51--Bryan Duplessis had 16 points for host USDHS (4-4), which held Mira Mesa’s Marc Ziegler to 14 points with a tough man-to-man defense. Mira Mesa is 9-6.

Mission Bay 73, Prince Ruppert (British Columbia) 67--Wyatt Spencer had 27 points for host Mission Bay (2-6).

Borrego Springs 54, Julian 53--Scott Mitchell scored 16 points for host Borrego Springs (3-4).
