SPORTSCOPE : Volleyball Power USC to Play Exhibition at Mira Costa : Local Stars Return as USC Volleyball Team Takes On Alumni at Mira Costa

Three-time national champion USC holds its men’s alumni volleyball game Saturday night at 7:30 at Mira Costa High School. The match features several local products, including Trojan middle blocker Bryan Ivie (Mira Costa) and setter Dan Greenbaum (Rolling Hills). Expected to play for the alumni are Adam Johnson of the U.S. national team, Bill Yardley, a former member of the national team, two-time Olympian Steve Timmons, professional beach volleyball players Tim Hovland and Steve Obradovich, Bill Stetson and former USC Coach Bob Yoder and his brother, Dave. First-year Coach Jim McLaughlin will direct the Trojans. Tickets are $5.

Seventh-ranked El Camino College (15-4) plays host to Mt. San Antonio College (4-14) Saturday night at 7:30 in the South Coast Conference men’s basketball opener.

The Lady Lions of Loyola Marymount will be at home against the Lady Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.

Rick Dempsey, Franklin Stubbs and Chris Gwynn of the Dodgers will be on hand Saturday for a free baseball clinic sponsored by Eastview Little League of San Pedro. The event will be conducted by Dodger Coach Joey Amalfitano, a San Pedro resident, at 11 a.m. at the Eastview fields at Gaffey Street and Capitol Drive. For more information call 833-1510.

The YMCA of Inglewood is sponsoring a Saturday basketball league for youths from first to 11th grade. The league begins Jan. 13 at the YMCA at 319 E. Kelso with a series of clinics. Gardena will conduct a clinic for basketball officials Wednesday and again Jan. 16. Participants will be eligible to officiate city league games for a salary of $10 a game. Officials must attend both meetings. Call 217-9537 or 217-9598.

The UCLA defending national champion women’s softball team will conduct a clinic Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bruin intramural field in Westwood.
