THE SIDELINES : Seattle Retains Bankhead, Valle
The Mariners have reached contract agreements for the 1990 season with pitcher Scott Bankhead and catcher David Valle, Woody Woodward, the Mariners vice president of baseball operations, said today.
Both players had arbitration hearings scheduled for next month. The two remaining Seattle players still eligible for arbitration are Harold Reynolds and Henry Cotto.
Contract terms were not announced.
Bankhead, 26, was 14-6 in 1989 with a 3.34 ERA. He set a team record for consecutive wins with nine straight victories from June 6 to Aug. 5. Valle, 29, was sidelined for 32 games after a knee injury May 28 at Milwaukee. Before that, he was hitting .285 with four home runs and 15 RBI. He finished the season with a .237 average, seven homers and 34 RBI in 94 games.
