Frederick’s Success Is a Family Affair

Carrie Frederick did not actually credit her two older brothers with helping her break two Savanna High School girls’ basketball records--but she came close.

Frederick, The Times’ Athlete of the Week, broke the Savanna record for points and assists in a game when she had 35 points and 17 assists in a 90-29 victory over Anaheim Thursday.

“We had a basketball court out on the driveway, so I used to play basketball with my older brothers all the time,” Frederick said. “That helped me out as a player--they wouldn’t take it easy on me.

“I just liked playing--I had no idea that teams actually had set plays. I thought you would just go out and play, so it was hard for me to learn the plays at first.”

As a result of her hard work with her brothers, Frederick doesn’t take it easy on any of her current opponents.

Before her record day Thursday, Frederick had 23 points and eight assists in Savanna’s 59-42 victory over Western Tuesday. Frederick, a junior, is averaging 20.3 points and 7.2 assists this season.

Her 35 points on Thursday broke the record of 31 shared by Frederick, who tied it earlier this season, and Becky Rediess, who set it in 1983.

“I honestly didn’t know that I was near the record until the coach told me when I came to the bench,” Frederick said. “I felt like I was having a good game, but I didn’t know about the record until later.”

One surprising thing about Frederick is her ability to rebound. At 5-feet-5, one would not expect her to grab 20 rebounds, as she did on Thursday. And she had 10 rebounds against Western Tuesday.

“I make it a point to try and rebound--I jump pretty well,” Frederick said. “I just try to get in the key and tip and control the ball.”
