Toros Must Win 2 Games Without Their Top Scorer

The men’s basketball team at Cal State Dominguez Hills must sweep a pair of games from Chapman College this weekend to have a chance at postseason play, according to its coaching staff.

However, the Toros, 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., are expected to be without their leading scorer for the second consecutive weekend.

Junior guard Robert Barksdale was bedridden this week with flu, prompting Coach Dave Yanai to speculate that even if Barksdale is available by tonight’s 8:05 start of its conference home game with Chapman (10-9, 2-4), he would not be ready to play. The teams meet Saturday night in Orange at 8:05.

Barksdale, a 6-foot-1 guard from Hawthorne who averages 19.5 points and 35 minutes a game, reportedly has lost more than 10 pounds during his illness.

Dominguez Hills played well without Barksdale last week but split a pair of CCAA games. The Toros held a 10-point lead with seven minutes to go but lost to Cal State Bakersfield, 58-54, then defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 58-56.
