HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Bonita Vista Sets Shutout Mark, Wins in 3-A

Top-seeded Bonita Vista collected its 19th shutout of the season to break the San Diego Section record of 18 held by La Jolla (1975) and Valhalla (1989). Bonita Vista defeated Vista, 2-0, in the first round of the Section 3-A boys Soccer Playoffs Tuesday at Southwestern College.

Gus Castanda scored both goals for Bonita Vista (21-1-1). Bonita Vista with play El Capitan (10-9-5) in the quarterfinals Friday at Southwestern.

Poway 3, Montgomery 0--Kevin Legg scored for second-seeded Poway to take a 1-0 halftime lead. David White scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half and Ryan Bowers scored 20 minutes later to secure Poway’s victory.

Torrey Pines 2, Monte Vista 0--After a scoreless first half Joe Kosakoff and Joe Wiloson each scored one goal for Torrey Pines (13-2-7).

Mira Mesa 3, Rancho Buena Vista 1--Tim Fuller scored 20 seconds into the match to give third-seeded Mira Mesa a 1-0 lead. RBV tied the match five minutes later, but Chon Vu scored twice before halftime for Mira Mesa.

Patrick Henry 2, Sweetwater 0--Mike Gigante scored both goals for Patrick Henry (6-12-3).

GIRLS’ SECTION 2-A

San Pasqual 9, El Cajon Valley 1--Monica Degn and Shannon MacMillan each scored two of their three goals in the first half helping San Pasqual to a 7-1 halftime lead. Top-seeded San Paqual improved to 20-4-1.

Valhalla 4, San Marcos 0--Peggy Pollem scored two goals and Erin Schneider and Dana Blackwood each added one for second-seeded Valhalla (11-7-5) to take a 4-0 halftime lead.

Clairemont 4, Madison 3--Mandy Lehr broke a 3-3 tie late in the second half for third-seeded Clairemont.

Escondido 2, Mission Bay 1--Carrie Fiocco scored one goal in the first half for Escondido (10-10-2) and Mission Bay came back in the second half to tie, 1-1. Fiocco scored in sudden victory for Escondido.

BOYS’ SECTION 1-A

Bishop’s 6, La Jolla Country Day 0--Senior co-captains Chris Damoose and Charlie Marshall scored two goals each for No. 1 seeded Bishop’s (16-2-4). Marshall has a Section high 45 goals in 21 games. Bishop’s will play Calvin Christian in the finals Friday.

Calvin Christian 4, Mountain Empire 2--Doug Brouwer and Scott Mawhiney each scored two goals for second seeded Calvin Christian.
