COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Herman’s Seven RBIs Lead Golden West

Sophomore Frank Herman had four hits and seven RBIs to lead Golden West College to a 14-12 victory over Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday at Cypress.

Herman started Golden West’s scoring in the first with a two-run home run, his third this season.

He added a two-run single in the fourth, a two-run double in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh. Herman walked in his other two at-bats.

Gary Christopherson hit a pair of solo home runs, his fourth and fifth, and Robb Carabba had three hits for Golden West (20-6, 11-5 in conference).

David Turner allowed four runs in four innings of relief, but got the victory. Derek Ogle pitched 1 1/3 innings for the save.

Ron Brown took the loss. He allowed seven runs in four innings of relief.

Doug McConathy had two hits, including a grand slam, for Cypress (16-14, 5-10). McConathy, a freshman third baseman, has 11 hits in his past 18 at-bats.

Troy Babbitt had two hits and two RBIs for Cypress.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball games:

Rancho Santiago 2, Orange Coast 0--Jerry Ashoff (5-2) pitched 8 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing eight hits and five walks, to lead visiting visiting Rancho Santiago (24-5, 13-3). OCC is 12-16, 5-10.

Riverside 11, Fullerton 10--Riverside scored the go-ahead run on an error with two outs in the eighth at Riverside. The Hornets (17-10, 8-7) made eight errors.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Saddleback 1, Riverside 0 (14 innings)--Sara Murillo’s squeeze bunt drove in Kristie Wilkins, who reached on a bunt single, to give Saddleback the victory at home. Denise Kuhns (12-9) pitched all 14 innings for Saddleback (14-16, 6-5).

Orange Coast 2, Cypress 1 (16 innings)--In the conclusion of a game stopped in the bottom of the 15th inning on April 28, Robin Welch scored with two outs on a ground ball to third base when the throw home was wide.
