DIGEST : Simi Valley Pair Join Ventura College Team

Simi Valley High’s Mike Wawryk and Steve Carnes said Thursday that they will attend Ventura College in the fall and play basketball for the Pirates.

Wawryk, a 6-foot-6 center who was a Times All-Ventura County selection, averaged 15.1 points and eight rebounds for Simi Valley (19-9), which lost in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 5-AA Division playoffs. Carnes, a 6-3 guard and a Times All-Ventura County selection, averaged a team-high 17 points and 5.5 assists.

College baseball--The status of Cal Lutheran’s Mike Clark on the NAIA All-District 3 baseball team was incorrectly reported in Friday’s editions. Clark, a senior right-handed pitcher, was named to the second team.

The pair also considered Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Ore.

Ron Robart, College of the Canyons center fielder, was named Western State Conference baseball Player of the Year in balloting by the coaches.

Robart, a sophomore from Monroe, led conference players with a .471 batting average in WSC play.

Four other region players were unanimous selections to the first-team--Canyons catcher J. R. Trujillo, Glendale first baseman Art Chute, Canyons second baseman Steve Kovacic and Moorpark third baseman Darin Furlong.

Glendale center fielder John Bojanac was a repeat first-team pick.

Freshmen Andy Martin and Sheldon Sparks of the The Master’s College, and junior Dave Leonhardt of Cal Lutheran were first-team selections on the NAIA All-District 3 baseball team.

Martin, a third baseman, hit .376, had 10 doubles and drove in 33 runs during the regular season. Sparks, an outfielder, had a .333 average with 20 RBIs.

Leonhardt, a second baseman chosen as a utility player, hit .344 with 11 doubles and a team-high 40 RBIs during the regular season.

Second baseman Craig Johnson (.366, 35 RBIs) and outfielder Jeff Cole (.328, 28 RBIs) of Master’s, and Cal Lutheran pitcher Mike Clark (6-1, 2.80 ERA) received honorable mention.
