Bo Haley of El Toro High School led an 11-hit attack with two doubles and a single to give the South a 9-8 victory Tuesday night in the Orange County all-star baseball game at Glover Stadium.

Haley was named the game’s most valuable player after scoring three runs and stealing home to help the South end a three-game losing streak in the 23rd annual charity game. The North leads the series, 12-11.

Haley, a three-year starter at El Toro, has yet to receive a scholarship offer from a four-year college but has been impressive in two all-star games. Two days ago, he had three hits for a South Coast League all-star team that beat a group of all-stars from the Angelus League.

“My only offer is from Cal State Long Beach,” Haley said, “and the coaches want me to walk on there.”

Coach Dan DeLeon of El Toro, who guided the South team, predicted Haley’s future will change in the next couple of weeks after major league clubs have finished signing prospects.

“Things will open up,” DeLeon said. “Bo has so much talent and skills that can be refined.”

The South won despite committing three errors and falling behind, 5-2, in the third inning, when Fullerton outfielder Bobby Patel keyed a four-run inning for the North with a two-run single.

The South came back in the bottom of the third with four runs on six hits, including a rare ground-rule triple by Mater Dei’s Lionel Hastings that drove in the go-ahead run. Hastings belted a fly ball deep to right-center field that bounced over the fence and was ruled a ground-rule triple.

Hastings added a double before retiring after six innings, but the usually fine fielding third baseman committed two errors in the third inning.

Tustin pitcher Dan Baker was the South’s most effective pitcher, allowing two hits in two innings.

Right-hander Chad Phillips of Magnolia was the North’s best pitcher, throwing two hitless innings and allowing only a walk.

The North scored three runs in the eighth to trim the South’s lead to 9-8, but Foothill’s Kent Donnelly came on in the ninth to strike out two of the three batters he faced and preserve the victory.

Katella center fielder Brandon Farley had the game’s only home run, driving a pitch off Laguna Hills’ Kevin Lovingier over the 342-foot sign in left field in the second inning.
