Southern Mississippi quarterback Brett Favre was hospitalized in stable condition today after a weekend traffic accident near his family’s home in Pass Christian, officials said.

Dr. Jare Barkley said the athlete has been in the intensive care unit in Gulfport Memorial Hospital since the one-car accident Saturday night but could be moved to a private room later today.

“Brett has a hematoma (a swelling caused by a collection of blood) on his liver,” Barkley said. “He has a lot of soreness in his abdominal wall. We hope his body can absorb it. He is in a lot of pain and under medication, but he is alert and in full possession of his faculties.”

The physician said Favre had “a concussion briefly. He was like a prize fighter being knocked out. He doesn’t remember the accident.”

Hancock County Sheriff Ronald Peterson said Sunday night that the police report showed Favre’s car left the roadway, hit a culvert, flipped over and landed on the passenger side against a pine tree.
