AMERICAN LEGION DISTRICT 20 PLAYOFFS : Panorama City, De La Maza Roll to 11-0 Victory Over Lancaster

Right-hander Roland De La Maza pitched five scoreless innings and keyed a five-run rally to lead Panorama City to an 11-0 rout of Lancaster in an American Legion District 20 playoff game at Pierce College on Wednesday.

The game was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

De La Maza (5-2) allowed two singles, struck out two and walked one.

In the second inning, Carlos Concha--who finished with three hits for Panorama City--lined a one-out single and moved to second on Shad Ortiz’s walk. De La Maza doubled in Concha for a 1-0 lead.

John Langley followed with a two-run single, and after Chris Robinson reached base on an infield error, Josh Smith singled home another run. Sean Henson’s ground out made it 5-0.

At 4 p.m. today, Panorama City (19-6) will play the loser of today’s 1 p.m. game between Sun Valley and Woodland Hills East. Both games will be at Birmingham High.

Panorama City will start right-hander Russell Ortiz (4-1).

Dave Garcia, Henson, Langley and De La Maza each had two hits for Panorama City. Right-hander Dave Unter pitched the final two innings for Panorama City.

Lancaster (16-9), which managed just four singles, was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament. Panorama City is 1-1 in the tournament, having lost, 5-3, to Quartz Hill on Tuesday.

In another District 20 playoff game:

Glendale 9, Newhall-Saugus 3--Newhall-Saugus pitchers Erik Hiljus and Oscar Silva combined to walk 15 batters in an elimination game at Birmingham.

The loser of today’s 4:15 p.m. game between Woodland Hills West and Quartz Hill at Pierce will play Glendale (19-7) at 1 p.m. Friday at Birmingham.

Glendale right-hander Danny Gray (5-1) went five innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. He struck out three and walked four. Gray also had two hits and three runs batted in.

Hiljus (4-5), a right-hander, walked nine in three innings. He struck out three, allowed four earned runs on two hits and threw two wild pitches.

Glendale jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third. Hiljus walked Brent Overfelt (two for two, two runs) to open the inning and, one out later, walked Steve Aviles. Gray and Bryan Day each followed with run-scoring singles.

Gray singled in two runs in the fourth to give Glendale a 4-0 lead. Manny Fernandez pitched the final four innings to earn a save. He allowed no runs on one hit, struck out four and walked three.

Glendale, which had nine hits, stranded 14 baserunners. Mike Regan had three hits and two RBIs for Glendale.

Newhall-Saugus, which lost to Sun Valley, 7-6, earlier Wednesday at Birmingham, fell to 15-10 and was eliminated. Newhall-Saugus stranded 24 runners in its two losses.

Outfielder Jeff Albert had two of Newhall-Saugus’ four hits off Gray and Fernandez.

An infield error and three walks by Gray led to Newhall-Saugus’ three runs in the fifth, which cut Glendale’s lead to 4-3.
