Helix 28, Madison 0--Senior Jarrett Parr carried the ball 17 times for Helix (1-0), gained 182 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one on a 32-yard run in the third quarter.

Poway 24, San Pasqual 22--San Pasqual scored 22 second half points but fell short as Poway, led by second-year quarterback Tom Fischer, held on for the victory. Fischer was 15 for 32 for 230 yards passing and led Poway in rushing with 86 yards in nine carries. He scored two of Poway’s three touchdowns on runs of two and 41 yards.

Fallbrook 35, Temecula Valley 16--Fallbrook’s Tony Burton rushed for 203 yards in 24 carries and scored two touchdowns. Fallbrook, which took a 14-9 halftime lead, scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.

Escondido 28, Montgomery 0--Jerry Singleton threw touchdown passes of 40 and 37 yards to Richard Cardoza to lead the Cougars.

San Marcos 41, Orange Glen 34--Despite Orange Glen’s 28-point second half, San Marcos held on for the victory at Orange Glen. San Marcos fullback Mark Frazier rushed 23 times for 109 yards and scored on runs of 13 and two yards. Orange Glen quarterback Omar Navarro completed 15 of 25 passes for 282 yards, threw two touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown.

Mira Mesa 28, Monte Vista 7--Wayne Pittman rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns in 12 carries to lead No. 4 Mira Mesa. Pittman scored on an 18-yard run as Mira Mesa led, 7-0 at the half. But the Marauders opened the game up in the third quarter with touchdown runs of 55 yards by Mike Bovee and 34 yards by Pittman. Robbie Edwards added an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter for Mira Mesa.

Tucson Amphitheatre 21, Chula Vista 20--Mario Bates rushed for 129 yards in 21 carries and had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to lead Amphitheatre. Chula Vista outgained Amphitheatre 373 yards to 164 but committed six turnovers. Le Mar Bailey led Chula Vista with 87 yards in five carries. Amphitheatre scored its final touchdown with 2:06 to play and won it on Bates’ two-point conversion run.

Mt. Carmel 14, Oceanside 7--No. 8 Mt. Carmel scored the winning touchdown against unranked Oceanside late in the fourth quarter when Jeff Scott capped a drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Scott gained 117 yards on 26 carries. Mt. Carmel receiver Sean Adams caught six passes from Matt Miller for 77 yards. One of Wright’s catches, a four-yarder, scored the first touchdown. Oceanside tied the game, 7-7, when Marlon Jenkins scored on a 12-yard run.

Carlsbad 17, Vista 16--After trailing 8-6 at halftime, host Carlsbad came back with 11 points in the third quarter and held on for the victory. Will Bartsch put Carlsbad on top early in the third quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Mike Gallardi then hooked up on a pass to Ted Johnson for the two-point conversion. Later in the quarter, Daniel Pulsipher made a 31-yard field goal. Eric Jencks had two touchdown passes for Vista, the first for 46 yards to Dante White in the second quarter and the second for 21 to Tony Garcia in the third quarter. Jencks completed 10 of 15 passes for 166 yards.

Sweetwater 20, Crawford 0--Willie Branch carried 21 times for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Sweetwater rushed for 358 yards. Crawford had 81 yards in total offense.

Valhalla 35, Hilltop 30--Keith Price rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns in 19 carries to lead Valhalla, which kept its offense on the ground. It rushed for 341 yards and passed for 25 yards on just one attempt. Quarterback Rob Reed, who finished with nine carries for 100 yards, scored on runs of one and 25 yards to give Valhalla a 14-0 lead. Price added a six-yard scoring run as Valhalla took a 21-3 halftime lead. Price scored on a 45-yard run in the third quarter and Courtney Arolado concluded Valhalla’s scoring with a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter as the Norsemen held off Hilltop.

Trabuco Hills 41, Hoover 7--Steve Perry scored Hoover’s lone touchdown with a 52-yard run to start the game. A 52-yard interception return by Brett Sutherland in the second quarter gave Trabuco Hills a 27-7 halftime lead.

Julian 47, Santa Fe Christian 6--Forrest Sissons rushed for 130 yards in eight carries and had touchdown runs of 69 and 10 in the first half. Julian’s Erick Fredburg rushed for 104 yards in 11 carries had two touchdown runs of 12 yards each.
