St. Genevieve 20, Murphy 0--Mike Mirolla rushed for 112 yards in 11 carries to lead St. Genevieve at Birmingham High.
Mirolla scored the first and last touchdowns of the game on runs of eight and 14 yards. He also set up another score in the second quarter with a 55-yard run to Murphy’s 19-yard line. One play later, fullback Pedro Gutierrez scored from nine yards to give St. Genevieve a 14-0 lead with 3 minutes 57 seconds left in the half.
The Valiants’ ground attack complemented the passing of quarterback Joe Gonzales, who completed four of his first five passes for 71 yards. He finished eight of 22 for 104 yards.
The stingy St. Genevieve defense allowed 116 yards. Murphy quarterback Hans Velasco was two of 12 passes for seven yards.
