PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Beuerlein Is Activated, Takes Long’s Roster Spot

Share

Quarterback Steve Beuerlein was activated Monday, using the roster spot vacated by Howie Long, who was placed on injured reserve with a broken right foot. That ended some weekend speculation that Beuerlein would be traded before the team had to exercise a move on its backup quarterback, who received a two-week roster exemption after signing Sept. 3.

Beuerlein’s agent, Ralph Cindrich, said he received several calls about the quarterback Monday, and guessed Beuerlein will be made available to other teams if Jay Schroeder continues to play well as the Raiders’ starter.

“Everyone thinks something’s up,” Cindrich said. “I expect something. I don’t know anything.”

The Rumor That Wouldn’t Die, Part VI: That Bobby Hebert to the Raiders story resurfaced again this weekend, although a trade to obtain the disgruntled New Orleans quarterback makes less sense based on Schroeder’s strong performance against Seattle.

Saint General Manager Jim Finks told the New Orleans Quarterback Club that the Raiders offered a first-round pick for Hebert five weeks ago but that offer was rejected.
