The Azusa Pacific University football team will try to bounce back from a lopsided defeat to Chico State last week when it visits Occidental on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Azusa (1-1) suffered a 58-21 loss to Chico State--the most points the Cougars have allowed in a game in their 13 seasons under Coach Jim Milhon. Cougar quarterback Brian Hunt also established a school record for most pass attempts in a game (55).

Occidental (1-1) defeated Whittier, 38-13, last week. Azusa holds a 9-7-1 advantage in the series.

“Their defense is sound and they have good team quickness,” Milhon said. “They rarely make mistakes because they are well-coached. I look at them and think that they are going to be a difficult opponent for us.”

The Cougars have been led by the passing of Hunt, who has completed 46 of 92 passes for 656 yards and five touchdowns to rank among the passing and total yardage leaders in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Azusa Pacific’s top receiver has been freshman Derick Williams, who has eight catches for 124 yards. Occidental is led by freshman running back Brian Madlangbayan, who has rushed for 195 yards in 43 carries and was a teammate of Williams last season at El Camino High in Oceanside.

In other games matching four-year colleges on Saturday, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (0-1) visits Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) and La Verne (0-1) plays host to the University of San Diego (2-0). Both games start at 1:30 p.m.

After a successful stint at Cal Baptist, it has not taken long for first-year Coach Gene Krieger to bring success to the Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team.

The Broncos, off to one of their best starts in school history with a 16-3 record, will be one of the top squads competing in the nine-team Cal State Dominguez Hills tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Pomona entered the week ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division II by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. However, the rankings did not include results of the Cal State Los Angeles Tournament, which the Broncos won by defeating eighth-ranked West Texas State in the championship match.

The Broncos also defeated, Humboldt State, Abilene Christian, Cal State L.A. and 10th-ranked UC Davis on the way to the title.

Bronco sophomore right-side hitter Alicia Burns leads the team with 54 service aces. Burns and freshman left-side hitter Heather Mathews tied a school single-match record with eight aces each against West Texas State.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team will try to reach the .500 mark when it travels to Northern California for a pair of games Saturday and Sunday.

The Broncos (2-3) will visit San Francisco State on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Cal State Hayward on Sunday at 2 p.m.

But Pomona will be without its leading scorer from last season, senior forward Amy Johnson, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury against Missouri-St. Louis last week.

Sophomore forward Shannon Payne, a former standout at Muir High in Pasadena scored all three Bronco goals in their 1-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis and 4-2 loss to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville last week.

Cal State Los Angeles has signed forward Marvin Whitlock, who started for the Mt. San Antonio College men’s basketball team the past two years, to a national letter of intent.

Whitlock, a physical inside player at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, averaged 7.7 points and 6.3 rebounds for Mt. San Antonio last season. As a high school player for Nogales of La Puente, Whitlock was an All-CIF Southern Section selection.
