ROUNDUP : Notre Dame Sweeps Past Louisville in Volleyball

For the first time in school history, the Notre Dame High girls’ volleyball team defeated Louisville, 15-10, 15-9, 15-8, in a nonleague match at Notre Dame on Thursday night.

The Knights (2-2) were paced by Mary Strong, who had nine kills and hit for a .333 percentage. Teammates Phyliss Francis (four stuff blocks) and Maria Thorpe (four service aces) also played key roles in the victory.

“We’ve had girls here for eight years and for seven years Louisville beat us,” Notre Dame Coach Ann McClung said. “So this is a very nice win. We hope it’s a changing of the guard.”

In other volleyball matches:

Royal d. Camarillo, 15-13, 15-7, 15-12--Wende Brown had 13 kills and Jennifer Hamilton had 10 to lead Royal (4-0, 2-0) in a Marmonte League match at Camarillo.

Thousand Oaks d. Westlake, 15-8, 15-11, 15-3--Erikka Gulbranson had 18 kills and eight digs and setter Jennifer Streltzoff had 34 assists for host Thousand Oaks (4-0, 2-0 in league play) in a Marmonte League match. Westlake fell to 1-1.

Newbury Park d. Channel Islands, 15-6, 15-2, 15-8--Jenny Cameron had 16 kills and Erin Mutch added 31 assists for host Newbury Park in a Marmonte League match.

L.A. Baptist d. Canyon, 9-15, 15-8, 15-11, 15-3--Monica Davis had 12 kills and Lucretia Haynes added eight kills and seven blocks for L. A. Baptist in a nonleague match at home. Amy Anderson had 20 assists for L. A. Baptist (4-0).

St. Bonaventure d. Fillmore, 10-15, 15-12, 15-8, 16-14--Elena Pedersen had eight kills for St. Bonaventure (4-1) in a nonleague match at home. Amy Olson added seven kills and Monica Montenegro had 15 assists.

Village Christian d. Alemany, 15-9, 15-9, 15-11--Christina Gumpert, Jennifer Kossuth and Julie Harvey each had six kills to lead Village Christian (3-0) in a nonleague match at home.

L.A. Lutheran d. Ribet Academy, 15-7, 15-10, 18-16--Tawnya Smith had six kills, seven digs and two blocks to lead L. A. Lutheran (2-1, 2-0) to a Heritage League win at Stonehurst Recreation Center.

Hart d. Saugus, 3-15, 16-14, 15-8, 15-7--Heather Medearis and Shannon Martin led Hart with six kills each in a nonleague match at Hart (1-2). Medearis also served four aces as Saugus fell to 2-2.

Burroughs d. Crescenta Valley, 15-9, 15-2, 15-9--Jennifer Wagner had 23 kills to lead Burroughs in a nonleague match at Crescenta Valley. Carmen Gutierrez added 10 kills for the winners (5-0).

Oak Park d. Montclair Prep, 15-12, 15-13, 15-5--Kristine Butler had 10 kills and Kelli Romney had seven service aces for visiting Oak Park in a nonleague match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 2, Orange Coast 1--Billy Kranz scored at the 11-minute mark of the first half and the 14-minute mark of the second to lead Moorpark to a nonconference win over the defending state champion at Orange Coast.

Robert Harris recorded both assists for Moorpark (5-0), which outshot Orange Coast, 21-12.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard 12, Mater Dei 2--Brian Border and Jim Toring each scored three goals and Jon Krawitz and Brandon Grusd added two each for Harvard (7-1) in the first round of the Canyon tournament.

Freshman goalie Peter Keifer contributed six saves.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 18, Rio Hondo 14--Nick Kaufman scored four goals to lead Valley in a nonconference match at Rio Hondo.

Robert Brown and Steve Banducci added three goals each and goalie Eung Park recorded 10 saves for Valley (5-4), which never trailed.
