University Stays With Run to Beat Santa Ana Valley

With University High School’s passing game stuck in low gear, running backs Jerry Apana and Marc Walker were able to keep the game out of reach of Santa Ana Valley en route to a 12-7 victory Friday night.

Apana, who gained 151 yards in 23 carries, was the game’s leading rusher. Anderson, who scored University’s only touchdown, was the second-leading rusher with 83 yards in 23 carries.

Nathan Morreale kicked two field goals in the first and fourth quarters for University.

Santa Ana Valley managed to get its offense moving behind the passing and running of quarterback Gary Grimes. The Falcons scored on a 21-yard pass from Grimes to Mike Castleberry early in the second half, but some key penalties and two dropped passes ended their rally.
