COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Cunningham Scores Three Times as Golden West Rolls to 42-0 Victory

Freshman Doug Cunningham ran for three touchdowns as Golden West College breezed past San Diego City, 42-0, in a Mission Conference football game Saturday at Orange Coast College.

Golden West (2-0, 1-0 in conference) used five quarterbacks, nine ball carriers and nine receivers, and gave Coach Ray Shackleford plenty of chances to evaluate his team.

Cunningham was the game’s leading rusher with 84 yards. He scored on runs of seven and three yards in the first half, and on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Magula had 54 yards and a touchdown in eight carries and Frank Vaccaro gained 53 yards in 13 carries.

Quarterback David Brunet completed nine of 16 attempts for 108 yards and a touchdown. He had a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jake Witherspoon in the second quarter to give Golden West a 21-0 halftime lead.

While the offense compiled 431 yards--287 on the ground--the defense stymied San Diego City (0-3, 0-2). San Diego City had only 32 yards rushing and 94 passing. Golden West had eight sacks for minus-82 yards and 10 times stopped ball carriers for no gain or minus yardage. San Diego City finished with 51 yards in total offense.

Mitch Melbon blocked a punt and had an interception and Bobby Silva added an interception for Golden West.
