Dons Hand USD First Loss in 14 Matches

The University of San Diego men’s soccer team lost for the first time in 14 matches over two seasons Friday night at San Francisco.

San Francisco defeated the Toreros, 2-0, in a West Coast Conference match on goals by Ole Clausen (penalty kick) and Zack Taylor (assisted by Jan Nordvic). The Dons (7-2-2, 2-0) recorded their third shutout of the season.

USD, ranked 17th in the latest Soccer America national poll, fell to 6-1-4, 0-1. The Toreros play Cal at USD on Tuesday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Angela Martin had 17 kills and Gracie Schutt 14 as San Diego State defeated Maryland, 15-6, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7, in the opening match of the Marine Midland Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.

Schutt added five blocks for the Aztecs (9-5), and teammate Jennifer Miller had eight kills and five blocks. Maryland dropped to 8-7.

Blair Noonan, a former San Pasqual High standout, paced Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference victory over the University of San Diego. Noonan had 19 kills in the 15-0, 15-17, 15-11, 15-9 victory that lifted the 14th-ranked Waves to 9-3, 1-0. USD freshman Nikki Wallace led five Toreras with double-figure kill totals with 13. USD fell to 6-9, 0-1.

UC San Diego defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 15-3, 11-15, 8-15, 15-7, 15-5. Vikki Van Duyne led UCSD with 21 kills, and teammates Liz Vesanovic and Dana Simone added 12 each. UCSD, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, improved to 19-4. CSLA fell to 10-12.

U.S. International had trouble with Loyola Marymount’s Kerry House (14 kills, 11 digs) and Deanna Doolittle (10 kills, 14 digs) as the Lions (7-9) defeated USIU, 15-5, 15-13, 15-4, in La Jolla. April Devine had nine kills and 21 digs for the Gulls (5-11).

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Biola, 10-15, 15-12, 15-0, 15-5, in a nonconference match at Biola. Debby Simpson led the comeback for the Crusaders (12-5) with 12 kills. Roberta Simpson added 11 kills. Biola fell to 8-8.
