PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Long May Be Ready to Play This Weekend

Defensive end Howie Long, who was supposed to be out six weeks after breaking a toe on his right foot against Seattle on Sept. 16, may return for Sunday’s game against San Diego.

“Howie has a chance,” Raider Coach Art Shell said Monday.

Long has spent the last four weeks on injured reserve, but was eligible to return to the roster on Monday. The Raiders have the luxury of sitting Long out one more week to take advantage of the team’s bye the following Sunday.

“We’ll do whatever’s right for this football team,” Shell said, “whether that means letting him sit or bringing him back.”

Cornerback Garry Lewis, who suffered a broken collarbone Sept. 23, is reportedly on schedule for a Nov. 4 return against Kansas City. Defensive end Mike Wise, who missed his second consecutive game with an ankle sprain, might be ready for the Chargers this week, Shell said. Tight end Mike Dyal, on injured reserve with a hamstring pull suffered Sept. 16, is recovering more slowly. . . . Kick returner Ron Brown’s left knee injury is not believed to be serious. . . . New linebacker Alex Gordon, acquired Monday from the New York Jets, probably will join the Raiders’ practice squad for now, Shell said.
