TOP PERFORMERS

If Buena Park Coach Rick Scott ever needs an illustration for consistency, all he has to do is point to junior running back Angel Barrios. Friday night, in the Coyotes’ 28-13 victory over Troy, Barrios rushed for 211 yards on 20 carries--the fourth consecutive game he had passed the 200-yard mark.

Fountain Valley’s Marcos Diaz scored on passes of 19 and 18 yards from Ryan Bertoni, and also completed a 51-yard scoring pass to Todd Gordon, but the Barons dropped a 22-20 Sunset League decision to Westminster.

LATE HEROICS

Brea-Olinda’s Marco Hernandez kicked a 25-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the game to give the Wildcats a 23-21 Orange League victory over Valencia.

The kick was especially sweet for Hernandez, who missed from 23 yards in the final minute that would have given Brea a victory over Savanna this season. Instead, Brea settled for a 7-7 tie in that game.

Josh Ireland scored on a three-yard run with 1:56 to play as Santa Margarita rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to remain unbeaten with a 35-31 victory over San Luis Obispo.

Lance Giuliano kicked a 22-yard field goal with 38 seconds to play to lift unbeaten and untied La Quinta to a 16-13 victory over Santiago. The field goal capped a rally from a 13-0 deficit, the result of six interceptions by Santiago.

ON DEFENSE

Brad Creagan scored the winning touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone and also intercepted a pass with 21 seconds remaining to give Villa Park a 24-21 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a Century League game at Santa Ana Stadium.

NOTEWORTHY

During halftime of the Huntington Beach’s football game against rival Marina, County Supervisor Harriet Wieder presented a $3,000 check to Oiler boosters to help purchase an electronic scoreboard for the school’s baseball field.

Mike Dodd, Huntington Beach assistant football coach and the school’s baseball coach, was asked how boosters convinced Wieder to make the donation. “A couple of our boosters were at a party, and she told them if we raised $3,000, she’d match it. One of our boosters had a video tape of her making the pledge, and she had to come through for us or risk losing some votes.”

The longest league winning streak in Orange County came to an end when Brea-Olinda upset Valencia, 23-21. Valencia had won 17 consecutive Orange League games dating back to a 1986 loss to Western.
