Newbury Park 55, Simi Valley 0--Jason Smith caught two touchdown passes and returned an interception for another score for the host Panthers in the final Marmonte League game for both teams Thursday.

Newbury Park set a single-game school record for points, breaking the record of 51 set against Channel Islands in 1971.

Smith had to fully extend his 5-foot-10 frame to haul in a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zack Sutton on the opening play of the second quarter that gave Newbury Park (3-7, 2-5 in league play) a 21-0 lead. Simi Valley finished at 0-10, 0-7.

On the Panthers’ next series, Sutton connected with Smith for a 35-yard score.

Smith, who also had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave Newbury Park a 49-0 lead late in the third quarter, caught seven passes for 136 yards and set a Panther season reception-yardage record with 659 yards.

Newbury Park linebacker Jeff Turner had three interceptions, one of which set up a Smith touchdown.
