PREP ROUNDUP : La Quinta Boys Upset Top-Ranked Santa Ana in Soccer

Ken Abadie’s goal was enough to give La Quinta High School a 1-0 victory over top-ranked Santa Ana in the first round of the Santa Ana boys’ soccer tournament Saturday at Rancho Santiago College.

La Quinta (3-0) also defeated Buena Park, 1-0, on Abadie’s goal in a second-round game.

In the Irvine boys’ soccer tournament:

Woodbridge 2, San Clemente 1--Krister Olson and Jason Szczuka scored for Woodbridge. Brent Eubanks scored for San Clemente.

In the South Torrance girls’ soccer tournament:

Katella 1, Hawthorne 0--Sara Thornton’s goal 22 minutes into the game beat second-seeded Hawthorne in pool play.

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson girls’ soccer tournament:

Rosary 6, Santa Ana Valley 0--Amy Shanks scored three times to lead Rosary (2-1-1). Jennifer Kambak, Jennifer Schulte and Rachel Schilling also scored for Rosary. Nadia Flores had 15 saves for Santa Ana Valley.

In the Daily Pilot boys’ basketball tournament:

Irvine 84, Saddleback 70--John Molle scored 38 points to lead Irvine. Brian Boothroyd had 17 and Jado Lee 14 for Irvine.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 56, Buckley 54--Ryan Westendorf, who had 31 points and 20 rebounds, made two free throws with nine seconds left for visiting St. Margaret’s (2-0).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 60, Los Alamitos 37--Jennifer Surface scored 30 points to lead host Pacifica (1-0).

At the Bolsa Grande seven-way wrestling tournament:

Huntington Beach wins--The Oilers had winners in six weight classes and went 6-0 in dual matches to win the tournament. Bishop Amat (5-1) was second and Costa Mesa (4-2) was third.

Mike Nguyen (125 pounds), Steve Alfano (135), Rob Wright (145), Eric Escobedo (152), Dan Lukes (171) and Mike Bolster (275) each went 6-0 to lead Huntington Beach (6-0).

At the El Toro 10-way tournament:

Magnolia finishes second--John McGown, who was voted outstanding wrestler at upper-weight level, led Magnolia. McGown (145 pounds) was 8-0 for Magnolia (7-1). Channel Islands won the tournament. Katella (6-2) was third, Trabuco Hills (6-2) fourth and San Clemente (5-3) fifth.
