COMMUNITY COLLEGE NOTES : Saddleback’s Mike Cook Signs With Stanford

Mike Cook, a wide receiver from Saddleback College, has signed a letter of intent to play at Stanford, the school announced Tuesday.

Cook, one of five local community college players to sign this week, led Orange County receivers this season with 50 receptions, eight for touchdowns.

Saddleback teammates Toney Jenkins (wide receiver) and Mark Broccardo (tight end) signed with Utah State.

Fullerton punter Kevin Leon and tight end Rob Coons, both all-state players, signed with Pittsburgh.

Leon averaged 41.6 yards per punt and Coons, known mostly for his blocking, caught 10 passes for 146 yards and four touchdowns.

Matt Simpson has been named men’s cross-county coach at Golden West College. Simpson has been a walk-on cross-county coach at Fountain Valley High School the past six years and will work in the same capacity at Golden West.

Simpson, a full-time teacher at Downey High School, is a graduate of Loara. He attended Orange Coast College and graduated from Cal State Long Beach.
