PREP FOOTBALL : Campbell, Walsh Best of All-City

Carson High quarterback John Walsh and Poly running back Jonathan Campbell were selected City players of the year in the 4-A and 3-A Divisions, respectively, to highlight the 54th annual All-City football teams selected by Los Angeles area sportswriters.

Walsh, who led the Colts to the 4-A Division title with a 12-1 record, set state single-season records with 4,206 passing yards and 48 touchdowns. He completed 229 of 388 passes and threw for more than 300 yards in eight games.

Carson had the most players on the 4-A Division team with nine, followed by Dorsey and Banning with four apiece. Tailback/quarterback Lamont Warren of Dorsey, last season’s player of the year, heads a list of five returning All-City selections in the 4-A Division. He is joined by defensive back Derrick Stewart of Granada Hills, running back Ontiwaun Carter of Kennedy and defensive linemen Marcus Long and Bob Tuitau of Carson.

Campbell, who led the Parrots’ to the 3-A Division title with an 11-3 record, gained a school-record 2,091 yards, an average of 149.4 a game, with 31 touchdowns. In Poly’s last five games of the season, Campbell rushed for 865 yards in 139 carries and scored eight touchdowns.

He rushed for 200 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Parrots’ 28-8 victory over Lincoln in the 3-A Division title game.

Poly, which had never won a City football title before, had two other players, offensive lineman Edward Moraino and defensive back Raul Torres, on the 3-A Division team.
