Aliipule Brothers Say They’ll Attend SDSU

Rancho Buena Vista High’s Don Aliipule, a two-time Times’ All-San Diego County selection and the Times’ 1990 lineman of the year, and three defensive players--linebacker Fred Aliipule, Don’s brother, also of RBV, linebacker Roger Blake of Hoover and defensive lineman Brian Greeley of Riverside’s La Sierra High School--have committed orally to play football at San Diego State next season.

Aliipule, 5-foot-11 and 245 pounds, chose SDSU over Brigham Young, the only other school school he seriously considered, RBV Coach Craig Bell said.

“He wanted to stay close to home. He and his brother both liked State from the beginning,” Bell said.

Don and Fred both made recruiting visits to SDSU and BYU, but Fred cancelled trips to Oregon and UCLA.

Said Bell of Don’s projected role with the Aztecs: “With his size and strength, our philosophy worked against him. He’ll take on a different role at State; he’ll end up playing defense.”

Blake, 6-4 and 225 pounds, visited the University of Arizona before committing to SDSU.

“The program they offer is outstanding, and (Coach Al Luginbill) really impressed us in the home visit,” said Rogelio Blake, Roger’s father. “He was sincere and up front.”

Greeley, 6-4, 270, chose SDSU over Arizona State, Nevada Las Vegas and Washington State.

“He’s exceptionally strong, and he’s rather fast for his size,” La Sierra Coach Hank Moore said. “He was one of our faster athletes. Even though he weighed 270, he could outrun most high school backs.”

High school players cannot sign a national letter of intent to play college football before Feb. 6.
