Thousand Oaks High quarterback Scott Peterson signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend the University of New Mexico in the fall.

Peterson, who broke six school passing and total-yardage records in two years as a varsity starter, visited the New Mexico campus Sunday, after starting at point guard for the Lancers’ basketball team Saturday night. Peterson passed for 1,281 yards last fall in leading the Lancers to a 7-2-2 record and the Marmonte League championship.

Peterson will play behind New Mexico quarterback Jeremy Leach, a Granada Hills graduate, who will be a senior in the fall. Leach is New Mexico’s all-time leading passer with 7,987 yards.

New Mexico, a Western Athletic Conference team that is 6-41 the past four seasons, will implement a run-and-shoot offense under new offensive coordinator Jan Quarless.

“One of his main concerns during his visit was (New Mexico’s) record,” Thousand Oaks Coach Bob Richards said. “But he said everybody there seemed real positive about the future.”

Peterson, who is quick of foot, also ran for 408 yards in 1990.
