Seldom has a team won a league basketball championship as convincingly as Tustin High School did on Thursday night with an 82-46 rout over visiting Woodbridge in a showdown for the Sea View League title.

Guard David Beilstein scored 34 points, including 14 in the third quarter, as Tustin (21-4, 8-2 in league) won its first league championship since sharing the Century League title with Santa Ana Valley in 1981.

Tustin opened a 10-2 lead with four unanswered baskets by forward Thomas Clayton and was never threatened. Beilstein gave Tustin a 37-20 halftime lead when he scored on a driving layup with five seconds left in the half, but the Tillers were just getting warmed up.

Beilstein made eight of nine shots during one stretch in the third quarter and Tustin’s defense forced 21 turnovers in avenging an earlier 70-69 loss in the first round of league play.

“This was by far our best game of the year, and it came at a very opportune time,” said Tustin Coach Tom McCluskey. “Our defense propelled our offense. We got a lot of good shots by forcing mistakes on their end of the court.”

Woodbridge (17-9, 7-3) was trying to win a title in its first season in the league after enjoying plenty of success in the Pacific Coast League. But center Mike Fenton was the only bright spot for the Warriors, scoring 21 points and getting 10 rebounds.

“I was disappointed with our offensive execution, but we finished 17-9, so nobody’s going to commit suicide,” said Woodbridge Coach Bill Shannon. “Even Tustin’s subs played great tonight. They were well-prepared and shot awfully well.”
