PREP BASKETBALL GIRLS’ SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Top-Ranked Morningside Breezes, 103-32

Tina Thompson scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Inglewood Morningside to a 103-32 victory over Antelope Valley in a Southern Section Division I-AA first-round playoff game Saturday night at Morningside.

Morningside, the two-time defending state Division I champion and The Times’ top-ranked Southern Section team, opened a 34-5 lead.

“Hopefully, this sends a message out to the rest of our opponents that we are in high gear for the rest of the playoffs,” said Ron Randle, Morningside’s first-year coach.

Janet Davis had 21 points, 16 rebounds and blocked five shots for Morningside. Princess Murray added 12 points and 12 assists for the Monarchs (25-2). Antelope Valley finishes 8-12.

Millikan 81, Bell Gardens 73--Taniko Hilbert scored 44 points, including 10 points in two overtime periods, to lead the Rams to a Division I-AA victory at Millikan. Hilbert, a 5-8 junior, sent the game into the second overtime with a three-point basket as the first overtime ended. Millikan (17-8) will play San Gabriel.

Lynwood 82, Alhambra 52--Kim Barfield scored 22 points and had 18 rebounds to lead the Knights to a Division I-AA victory at Lynwood. Bridgett Polk added 16 points for Lynwood (22-3). Alhambra finishes 17-7.

Redlands 48, Central 42--Penny Porter scored 12 points, had four assists and five steals to lead the Tigers (23-3) at Redlands in a Division I-AA first-round game. Central finishes 14-11.

Arroyo Grande 46, Santa Barbara 44--Shawna Coleman scored 18 points, including two late fourth-quarter baskets, to lead the Eagles (16-7) to a Division I-A victory at Arroyo Grande. Santa Barbara (11-13) missed a game-tying shot in the final seconds.

Capistrano Valley 52, Ocean View 51--Alisa Farr made a three-point basket with four seconds remaining in overtime as the Cougars advanced in a Division I-A game at Capistrano Valley. Farr, who scored all of the Cougars’ points in overtime, had 28 points, 21 in the second half.

Hart 85, Hueneme 28--Anjanette Dionne scored 20 points to lead the Indians in a Division I-A game at Hart. Shannon Martin added 14 points and Nicole White had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Hart (22-5), which won Southern Section 5-A Division titles in 1989 and 1990. Hueneme finishes 5-18.

Brea-Olinda 99, Orange 27--Jinelle Williams scored 26 points and had 19 rebounds and Jody Anton scored 16 points and had nine rebounds for host Brea-Olinda (25-1) in a Division II-AA first-round game. Nicole Erickson scored 15 points, Sarah Beckley added 12 and Cathy Lewis had 10 for Brea-Olinda.

Palos Verdes 95, Laguna Hills 20--Jeffra Gausepohl scored 20 points to lead the Sea Kings to a Division III-AA victory at Palos Verdes. The Sea Kings (26-2), The Times’ second-ranked team, are top-seeded in the division.

Newport Harbor 63, Alemany 60--Maureen McLaren scored 27 points as Newport Harbor (13-11) rallied from a 10-point deficit to a victory in overtime in a Division III-AA game at Alemany (19-8).

Santa Clara 74, Marshall Fundamental 25--Angie Chaparro scored a game-high 19 points and Jennifer Gutierrez added 13 to lead Santa Clara in a Division IV-AA game at Santa Clara.

Riverside Notre Dame 57, Oak Park 54--Delilah Vergara sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to lead the host Titans in a Division IV-AA game.
