HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Smith’s Goal on Free Kick Gives Bonita Vista a Victory

After trailing at halftime, the Bonita Vista girls soccer team played catch-up to defeat Patrick Henry, 2-1, in the Division I quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Playoffs.

With six minutes to play, Holly Smith scored off a free kick from 35 yards out to clinch the victory for second seeded Bonita Vista (22-1-2). Bonita Vista, which trailed 1-0 at halftime, didn’t score until 13 minutes remained in the game. Kari Campe scored off on assist by Sara Barnett to tie the score. Patrick Henry finished 11-12-1.

Bonita Vista will play third-seeded Poway in the semifinals Friday.

Other Division I games:

Poway 4, Hilltop 0--Kelly Arthur, Jenny Briscoe and twins Michelle and Tracey Christiansen each contributed a goal for third-seeded Poway (17-6-1). The Titans led, 2-0, at halftime.

San Dieguito 5, Chula Vista 0--Amy Comte scored two goals, and Lauren Frickman had two assists for the top-seeded Mustangs (21-1-1), who recorded their 17th shutout of the season. San Dieguito will meet Mira Mesa in the semifinals.

Mira Mesa 1, Mt. Carmel 0--Senior Becca Bowers scored off an assist by Jenn Peterson at the 33-minute mark of the first half for fourth-seeded Mira Mesa (16-3-4). Mt. Carmel finished, 11-9-3. Division III

Madison 5, Coronado 0--Celeste DeLeon scored two goals and Kathy Clark had a goal and three assists to lead the second-seeded Warhawks (14-5-4). Abbie Jacobs, who was unscored upon in the City Central League, recorded her ninth shutout.

USDHS 3, West Hills 0--The top-seeded Dons (20-3-2) earned the right to face City Western League rival Mission Bay in the semifinals. Goalie Ann David recorded USDHS’ 15th shutout of the season. BOYS Division I

Bonita Vista 1, Mt. Carmel 0--Junior Ryan Yakubik scored at the 41-minute mark giving third-seeded Bonita Vista (17-3-2) the victory. Mt. Carmel finished 14-6-1.

San Diego 1, Mira Mesa 0--Juan Velasco scored the game’s only goal four minutes into the first half off a corner kick by Tony Chowana. The second-seeded Cavers improved to 18-1-2 and will face Bonita Vista in the semifinals. The Marauders finished 9-7-3.

Poway 2, Southwest 1--John Grosley scored with 16 minutes left to clinch the victory for fourth-seeded Poway (15-4-2). After a scoreless first half, Rian Watts scored early in the second to put Poway ahead 1-0. Division II

Valhalla 4, San Pasqual 2--Ian Saward scored two goals to lead second-seeded Valhalla (18-1-2), which advanced to face the winner of today’s game between Torrey Pines and San Marcos. Division III

St. Augustine 6, Madison 1--Tonatu Cuevas, St. Augustine’s second-leading scorer, had two goals and two assists. The top-seeded Saints are 15-5-2.

Mission Bay 6, Ramona 1--Socrates Scatolini scored three times and Aaron Susi twice for the second-seeded Bucaneers, who moved to 12-3-4.
