SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Pair of Late Goals by St. Paul Eliminate St. Francis, 3-2

The St. Francis High boys’ soccer team experienced a touch of deja vu in its Southern Section 2-A Division second-round playoff match Wednesday against St. Paul.

With St. Francis holding a one-goal lead with five minutes to play, visiting St. Paul scored twice to stun the Golden Knights, 3-2, and advance to Friday’s quarterfinals against La Salle.

“It was sort of a flashback to the beginning of the year when we had some problems,” Coach Glen Appels said. “We quit marking (and) left some guys out in front of the goal all by themselves.”

St. Francis, which finished its season 10-6-3, held a 1-0 lead against Nogales in its second match of the season but yielded two goals within 30 seconds in a 2-1 loss.

Tim Durkin scored to give St. Francis, the San Fernando League champion, a 1-0 lead one minute into the match. Kevin Caberto added a goal at the 10-minute mark in the second half. St. Paul trimmed St. Francis’ lead to 2-1 on a breakaway two minutes later.

“We felt pretty comfortable with a two-goal lead,” Appels said. “Maybe too comfortable.”

In another boys’ match:

La Salle 6, Canyon 1--Marino Napuri had two goals and two assists for La Salle in a second-round 2-A match at La Salle.

Gary Barrera, Josh Hagen, Brad Toothman and Carlos Sanchez added goals for the Lancers (17-5-2).

Rodrigo Dandas scored for Canyon (9-5-4).

GIRLS

Temple City 3, Alemany 0--Goalkeeper Cami Tubbs made 14 saves, but the loss of three of Alemany’s top five players to injuries hampered the host Indians (15-10-2) in a second-round 3-A match.

Temple City outshot the Indians, 17-12, and Carmen Morell scored a hat trick.

Melody Arvonio, Alemany’s leading scorer this season with 12 goals, missed the match after sustaining a broken wrist in a first-round win at Buena last week.
