Cal State Northridge overcame a four-run deficit Tuesday to post its first softball victory over Cal State Fullerton in six years, taking a 5-4 decision in the opener of a doubleheader at CSUN. Fullerton won the second game, 6-0.

Beth Calcante, Northridge’s top hitter at .373, drove in two runs with a fourth-inning double. Three consecutive singles led to three runs in the decisive fifth inning.

“We probably won’t see something like that again all year,” Fullerton Coach Judi Garman said. “They only got five hits, but they got them together.”

Pamela Barr (4-4) struck out four batters in 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the win. Barr came on in the fourth with runners at second and third, but she struck out Kelly Hunt to end the threat. In suffering her first loss in two seasons, Fullerton ace Tiffany Boyd (5-1) gave up five hits and five runs in four innings.

In the second game, three CSUN errors led to three unearned runs in Fullerton’s easy win.
