Division I

Poway 50, Fallbrook 37--Kristen Carlson picked a nice to time to have one of her best games of the season.

The 6-foot-4 sophomore came off the bench, scored 10 points and helped top-seeded Poway into the San Diego Section Division I finals by beating Fallbrook at Mira Mesa High.

Poway (25-1) is vying for its first title since 1983, but will have to beat Mt. Carmel, the only team to beat them during the season. Poway has won two of the three meetings with the Sundevils and has won 22 straight.

Poway has been stopped in the section semifinals the past two years, and the quarterfinals the year before that under fourth-year coach Jay Trousdale.

All of Carlson’s points came in the second quarter. For the game, she grabbed four rebounds and blocked five shots for the Titans in relief of Palomar League player of the year Allison Brady, who committed her second foul less than five minutes into the game.

The second quarter was the decisive period. Poway held a 10-6 lead entering it, despite making only three of 18 shots. Then Carlson went to work. She had five of Poway’s seven field goals in the period and the Titans took a commanding 27-16 lead into halftime.

Jamie Shadian led all scorers with 12 points.
