With Brea-Olinda trailing Ventura, 23-22, at halftime in the Division II-AA title game Saturday, Lady Cats Coach Mark Trakh tried to put his players at ease by reminding them they didn’t have to win the game to qualify for the state playoffs. But the reminder didn’t relax Anton. “She said, really loud so the other kids could hear, ‘We’re not going to lose this game,’ and I believed her,” Trakh said. “The other kids kind of rallied around her.” Anton made sure of her proclamation. On defense, she held Denise Rea, who had 12 points in the first half, to zero for eight shooting. Anton finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds and Brea-Olinda defeated Ventura, 50-42, to win its third consecutive Southern Section title. In the second round Wednesday, Anton scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half and had 17 rebounds in a 68-59 victory over Riverside North.

Other top performers:

Shawna Berke and Shawn Viloria, who each had a goal and an assist in El Toro’s 3-1 victory over Simi Valley in the Division 4-A soccer championship.

Olivia DiCamilli, who scored 23 points in Costa Mesa’s 73-71 loss to St. Bernard in the Division III-A title game and 26 points in the Mustangs’ 59-42 victory over La Canada in the semifinals.
