El Cajon Valley trailed most of the way, rallied to tie it, but eventually fell, 71-66, to Ventura in a Division II girls’ basketball Southern California Regional playoff game at El Cajon Valley.

El Cajon Valley, which won its first San Diego Section Division II championship with a 55-42 victory over Carlsbad on Saturday, fell behind and stayed there until midway through the fourth quarter.

The Braves had tied it, 60-60, then went up, 61-60, but leading scorer junior Heather Holm was on the bench, having committed her fifth foul.

Ventura got hot from there and raced to its 24th victory in 28 games. El Cajon Valley finished its best season ever at 28-2.

“At the end, (Ventura) shot very well,” El Cajon Coach Robert Holm said. “It could have gone either way.”

Carlsbad 54, Reedley 44--Sophomore center Holly Gerdes scored a season-high 19 points, while sisters Sarah and Jenny Dolkas and Vanessa Nygaard each had 11 for Carlsbad, which pulled off a mild upset. The sixth-seeded Lancers (24-2) led the entire contest. Sophomore forward Nygaard, who was battling a bad cold, also had 18 rebounds to help defeat fifth-seeded Reedley (20-6).
