Channel Islands 13, Rio Mesa 7--Jeff Palmer hit a two-out grand slam in the sixth inning as host Channel Islands (4-0) beat Rio Mesa (3-1), The Times’ top-ranked team in the Valley area.

Channel Islands snapped a 7-7 tie with six runs in the sixth. Tajah Merrill’s two-run home run gave Channel Islands a 9-7 lead, and Palmer’s blast came later in the inning. Angel Aragon (2-0), who went three for three, allowed 10 hits and struck out six.

Angel Lopez and Jeff Flores each had three hits for the Spartans.

El Camino Real 5, Reseda 0--Gregg Sheren doubled twice and Sean Boldt tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight in a West Valley League win.

San Fernando 6, Granada Hills 5 (nine innings)--Alfredo Hernandez’s second hit, a bases-loaded single in the ninth, scored Rick Savala with the winning run for host San Fernando (4-2, 2-0) in a North Valley League game.

Sylmar 13, North Hollywood 1--Dereck Ornelas’ grand slam highlighted a 10-run sixth inning for host Sylmar (3-2, 2-0) in an East Valley League game.

Crespi 8, St. Francis 2--The Celts (3-3) scored eight runs in the first at Valley College. Pitchers Jeff Suppan and Rick Marino combined for 11 strikeouts and Brodie VanWagenen had two hits.

Poly 6, Grant 3--Steve Chavez went three for four for visiting Poly (5-1, 2-0) in an East Valley League game. Robert Barron picked up the win in relief.

Hart 5, Saugus 1--Shane O’Brien struck out 14 and allowed two hits to lead host Hart (3-2) in a nonleague game. Keith Halcovich was four for four with two doubles and three RBIs.

Camarillo 9, Ventura 0--Danny Haas (2-0) allowed one hit and faced only one batter over the minimum to lead Camarillo to a nonleague win. Robert Sanchez drove in three runs and Mike Muncy homered for Camarillo (3-1).
