HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Grossmont’s Spears Tosses Perfect Game, Strikes Out 10 Against Fallbrook

Share

Senior left-hander Mike Spears pitched a perfect game while striking out 10 to lead Grossmont to a 7-0 victory over visiting Fallbrook in an Oceanside Pirate Tournament game Tuesday.

Spears, 5-feet-11 and 165 pounds, relied mostly on his fastball, which has been clocked in the mid-80 m.p.h. range. He ran his record to 3-0, and Grossmont improved 6-0 with its 20th consecutive victory. Including last season, Spears’ varsity record is 10-0 with five saves.

Grossmont defeated San Diego, 5-2, to win the section 2-A championship last year. Spears was the winning pitcher.

“He was awesome,” Grossmont Coach Jeff Meredith said. “I think they hit two balls hard. He got ahead of hitters all day. I think he went 3-2 with three people. He was totally in control the entire game.”

Spears threw only 79 pitches and outdueled another of the county’s top pitchers, Aaron Wauschek. Wauschek (0-1) was rocked for all seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. He allowed seven hits as the Warriors fell to 3-1.

The only shaky spot for Spears, who fired a one-hitter against Fallbrook last year, came in the fifth inning. Matt Dunlap hit a 370-foot fly out to the deepest part of the park, straightaway center field. Darren Buckley ended the inning with a sharp line drive to shortstop Cory Schweer.

John Heinrichs started the rally in the first when he reached base on a strikeout/wild pitch. He capped the rally with a two-run triple in his second at-bat of the inning. Wynter Phoenix and Joe Lopez each had two hits and an RBI for the Foothillers.
