PREP ROUNDUP : No.1 Tustin Is Stunned by Santa Ana

Santa Ana, which lost by 19 runs to Tustin in the Newport Elks tournament last week, shocked the top-ranked Tillers, 3-2, in a nonleague baseball game Tuesday at Santa Ana High School.

Nestor Gonzalez put down a suicide squeeze with one out in the seventh, scoring Bill Johnson with the winning run for Santa Ana (3-2), which lost, 20-1, to the Tillers (3-2) last week.

In other nonleague baseball games:

Los Amigos 3, Estancia 2--Bill Speer (1-1) struck out 14, walked two and gave up four hits for host Los Amigos (3-3). Pete Gomez’ RBI double in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie.

Westminster 16, Corona del Mar 1--Kirk Pierce was four for five and had eight RBIs for visiting Westminster, which had 17 hits. Pierce hit two home runs, a grand slam and a three-run homer, giving him 11 RBIs in two days.

Orange 2, Fullerton 1--Josh Belovsky preserved the victory for Ray Galvin (1-0) with his first save, but needed defensive help. Center fielder Jeff Peterson stopped Fullerton in the seventh by making an over-the-shoulder catch of David Chacon’s drive and throwing to first to double up Mike Holley. Peterson also robbed Fullerton catcher D.C. Olsen of extra bases in the third, catching his drive at the 434-foot sign in deep center at Orange High.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Corona Del Mar 10, Thousand Oaks 8--The Sea Kings (3-1), ranked third in the Division 4-A preseason coaches’ poll, defeated No. 2 Thousand Oaks at Corona del Mar. David Bain swept his singles sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, and the No. 2 doubles team of Dean Camaras and Scott Pennier topped Thousand Oaks’ No. 1 doubles team in a key set, 6-4.

Capistrano Valley 13, Laguna Beach 5--Ion Marinescu won in singles, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, and Capistrano Valley (5-0) swept in doubles to defeat Laguna Beach for the first time in the school’s history.

In nonleague golf:

Huntington Beach 193, Estancia 213--Scott Gibson shot par 36 and Mike Hobson shot 37 as Huntington Beach led two-time defending Southern Section champion Estancia at SeaCliff in the first half of a match to be completed next Tuesday at Mesa Verde in Costa Mesa. Paul Hinkle shot 39 for Estancia.

Marina 376, Miraleste 443--Dan Dalton shot a one-under-par 73 for Marina (2-0) in a match started Friday at Rolling Hills and finished Tuesday at Meadowlark.

In the first round of the Laguna Hills softball tournament:

Ocean View 7, Saugus 0--Tammy Dowlin had a no-hitter, striking out seven, and had two hits, including a triple, for Ocean View (4-0).

In nonleague softball:

Mater Dei 2, Garden Grove 0--Amy Godwin (3-0) threw a no-hitter and came within one walk of a perfect game. Godwin also tripled and scored in the fourth inning for the visiting Monarchs (5-0).
