PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Westminster Scores in 9th, Beats Marina

Jeff Clausi’s pinch-hit double drove in Greg Cantin with the eventual winning run in the top of the ninth inning of Westminster’s 5-3 victory over Marina in a Sunset League game Friday at Marina High School.

Marina (4-7, 0-2) scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Hay’s two-run double tied the score.

Dennis Barclay pitched five innings, giving up one hit and striking out seven, and Keith Cowley (4-0) pitched four innings of relief, striking out four and giving up four hits and three runs for Westminster (5-5, 1-0).

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 3, Edison 0--Rob Fisher (3-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven and Derek Brown had two hits, including a double and an RBI for visiting Fountain Valley (12-1, 2-0).

Santa Ana 12, Ocean View 3--David Fausto (1-0) pitched a complete game, with five strikeouts and also had three RBIs for host Santa Ana (6-2, 2-0).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 10, Loyola 5--Dave Knuff doubled and scored and hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning; Darren Trolio doubled and hit a bases-empty home run in the fourth inning and Bill Blanton had three hits and scored twice for host Mater Dei (4-4, 1-1).

St. John Bosco 8, Servite 4--Chris Honikel had two hits and an RBI for host Servite (5-3, 1-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 4, Fullerton 1--Chris Looney (2-2) gave up four hits and struck out nine for host Sunny Hills (6-3, 3-0). Mike Hunter had two hits for Sunny Hills, which scored a run on a passed ball, one on a wild pitch and another on an error.

La Habra 12, Sonora 2--Visiting La Habra (4-2, 2-0) had 14 hits. Scott Veeder (3-1) had seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory and had three hits, two RBIs, scored two runs and stole two bases. Matt Smith had three hits and four RBIs.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 3, Canyon 2--Junior Dan Strapp (2-1) had 10 strikeouts for host Villa Park (5-4, 3-0). Canyon had the bases loaded and no one out in the seventh, but Strapp escaped with two strikeouts and a fly out.

El Modena 2, Foothill 1--Chad Henderson doubled to lead off the fifth inning, went to third on a groundout and scored on Aaron Aguirre’s single for El Modena (5-2, 2-1), which took a 2-0 lead. Foothill (3-6, 1-2) tied the score when Neil Garcia scored on David Trentine’s single in the fourth.

Santa Ana Valley 2, Orange 1--Trailing, 1-0, heading into the seventh inning, Roger Onofre squeezed home Jose Sandoval with the tying run for visiting Santa Ana Valley (3-7, 1-2). Orange pitcher Josh Belovsky (1-2) hit Alex Carbajal, then pinch-runner Cesar Ruiz stole second and scored on a wild throw. Jose Arroyo (1-2) threw a three-hitter for the victory, lowering his ERA to 1.00. Belovsky allowed four hits in the loss for host Orange (2-7, 0-3).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 11, Buena Park 4 (6 innings, darkness)--Steve Friedrich had two home runs, five RBIs and scored three runs, and Guy Pinelli pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 for visiting Troy (3-2, 2-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 4, Kennedy 1--Mike Way (3-0) pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts for host Pacifica (5-6, 1-1).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Ayala 0--At Chino Hills Community Park, Matt Hendren (3-0) pitched a complete game, striking out nine for his second shutout of the season. Jeff Courvoisier had a two-run single in the fifth for Orange Lutheran (5-1, 1-0).

Whitney 15, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Jason Hill drove in three runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly for visiting Whitney (7-2, 1-1). Capistrano Valley is 2-2, 0-1. In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 6, Magnolia 2--Matt Selinske had three hits and two RBIs and Mike Ryan had two hits and scored a run for host Brea-Olinda (5-3, 2-0). Marc Kaiser (1-1) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Brea-Olinda.

Valencia 5, Western 2--Harold Ceron and David Morikawa each had two hits and an RBI for visiting Valencia (5-3, 2-1). Jason Hanmer (2-0) pitched the first four innings, and Mike Lorge got a save, working the final three innings.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 12, Capistrano Valley 1--Marc Verwayne (2-1) pitched two innings of relief for the victory. It was 1-1 until the sixth when El Toro scored 11 runs on seven hits and four errors. Dave Owens had two hits and an RBI, Chad Hoelker had a two-run double in the sixth inning, Wade Jackson had two hits, two stolen bases and an RBI and Brian Haas had three hits and three RBIs for host El Toro (6-3, 2-0).

In nonleague baseball:

Liberty Christian 9, La Verne Lutheran 7--Justin Flagg had a three-run double in the fourth to break a 5-5 tie for host Liberty Christian (5-3).
