COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Purse on the Money for L.A. City

James Purse, a freshman right-hander from Van Nuys High, combined with catcher and former high school batterymate Keith Quigley to lift L.A. City College to a 10-0 win over Mission College in a Southern California Athletic Conference baseball game at Valley College on Saturday.

Purse (5-2) handcuffed the Free Spirit on just four singles and struck out five.

Eric Berger, a freshman from Crescenta Valley, was three for five for L.A. City (12-11, 6-2 in conference play) and teammate Bert Bull was three for four and had four runs batted in.

Sophomore right-hander Eddie Chavez (3-3) took the loss.

In other baseball games:

Moorpark 11, Valley 6--Mike Jenkins pitched 8 2/3 innings to outlast Valley ace Steve Trainor in a Western State Conference game at home.

Jenkins (5-2) gave up all six runs and eight hits, struck out three and walked seven. Moorpark (10-12, 2-8) had 16 hits, 15 of which were singles.

Trainor (4-3) took the loss for Valley, his third in a row.

Santa Barbara 6, Oxnard 4--Right-handed reliever Joe Canfield (5-4) surrendered a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.

Chris Gaston hit a two-run homer to give Oxnard a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Bryan Lovelace and Jeremy Herider each added two hits for Oxnard (16-12, 7-3).

The Master’s 7, Biola 4--Russ Henzie had two doubles and drove in two runs to lead Master’s to its sixth consecutive victory in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

Dan O’Sullivan, Kevin Backes and Brent Sostrum also had two hits for Master’s (13-7, 7-4).

Master’s starter Mike Smith (3-3) allowed four runs in eight innings, struck out seven and walked two. John March relieved in the ninth and earned his fifth save.

David Little took the loss for Biola (8-14, 5-7).

Victor Valley 14, Antelope Valley 5--Antelope Valley dropped to 0-8 in conference play and 2-18 overall after its Foothill Conference loss to Victor Valley (3-5, 9-14). Tony Hackworth led off the ninth inning with a home run for Antelope Valley, his first of the year.

Starter Tim Wallace took the loss for Antelope Valley. Wallace gave up 10 runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out three in five innings.

Bakersfield 4, Glendale 1--Ray Judy went three for five and had two RBIs to lead Bakersfield past visiting Glendale in a WSC game.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 4-9, Azusa Pacific 2-1--Brenda Frafjord went four for seven and knocked in four runs in the two games to help the Regals (14-0) remain undefeated.

Marjie Sievers (7-0) and Leslie Stevens (7-0) eached pitched seven-hitters.
