PREP ROUNDUP : Green’s Clutch Performance Helps Tustin Reach Semifinals

Share

Shawn Green’s late-inning heroics helped Tustin High School’s baseball team defeat Ocean View, 4-3, Tuesday and advance to the semifinals of the Upper Deck Classic.

Zach Elliott hit a fly ball over the drawn-in center fielder to give the Tillers (8-2) the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning.

But the play of Green, a senior center fielder, allowed Tustin to reach that point.

He hit a bases-empty home run in the sixth to tie the score, 3-3. In the seventh, after catching a line drive, he threw out Randy Karliner trying to score from third base.

Karliner was ejected for arguing the call at the plate, so he wasn’t playing first base in the bottom of the eighth when Seahawk infielders made two throwing errors.

After Josh Hylton reached on an error to open the inning, Green bunted for a base hit. The runners advanced when the throw eluded Ocean View’s new first baseman, setting up Elliott’s game-winning fly ball.

The first and fifth innings of the game at Ocean View were played in the rain.

Five of the eight scheduled tournament games were played, but the championship-round game between La Quinta and Fountain Valley was postponed until today--weather permitting.
