In an Upper Deck quarterfinal:

La Quinta 11, Fountain Valley 3--Walter Dawkins had two hits, three runs batted in and was also the winning pitcher for La Quinta (11-2) in a quarterfinal game at Fountain Valley.

In the Chaparral tournament in Las Vegas:

El Toro 5, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2--A two-run double by Sal Schachter in the top of the seventh lifted El Toro on Thursday in a first-round game at Bonanza High School.

El Toro (7-3) trailed, 2-1, going into the seventh, but took advantage of three Notre Dame errors, a wild pitch and two hits to rally for the victory.

Schachter, El Toro’s shortstop, scored Chris Adams and Brian Haas with what proved to be the winning runs with a one-out double to right field. Earlier, Adams reached on an error and moved to third after Haas singled and a Notre Dame outfield error allowed both runners to take an extra base.

Another Notre Dame error put Dave Owens on first, with Schachter moving to third. Schachter scored on a wild pitch, and Owens scored on Chad Hoelker’s sacrifice fly.

Notre Dame (6-1) took a 2-0 lead in the second behind two hits and an El Toro error. El Toro sophomore pitcher Marc VerWayne (3-1) then pitched five shutout innings to get the victory with a four-hit, three-strikeout performance.

In other Chaparral tournament games:

Servite 5, Bishop Gorman 1--Steve Sandoval pitched a three-hitter and had two hits to lead Servite (7-4) over Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) in a featured game Thursday night at Clark High School.

Servite 6, Bonanza 4--Servite defeated Bonanza (Las Vegas) at Bonanza High School earlier in the day behind Chris Honikel’s home run and two runs scored. Adam Anderson picked up the victory, pitching six innings.

In the semifinals of the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Mission Viejo 8, Laguna Hills 7 (9 innings)--Neal Caldwell hit a one-out single to score Yas Kasayama from third in the ninth inning. Mission Viejo scored four runs on five hits and one walk with two outs in the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6.

Irvine 5, Gahr 2--Mike Seal pitched and hit the Vaqueros (7-4) into the championship game at Irvive. He had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Seal (2-2) also pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12.

In the Pride of the Coast tournament:

Santa Fe 8, Bolsa Grande 7 (eight innings)--Davin Ravira reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch with two outs for Santa Fe (1-5-1) in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
